Kefalonia and its Secrets

Only a three and a half hour flight from London Gatwick is Kefalonia, a beautifully unspoilt Greek island paradise in the Ionian Sea, where I holidayed this summer with my family.

Kefalonia was devastated by an earthquake in 1953, however a few areas were untouched and remain pristine in their original conditions. The beautiful village of Assos is a hidden gem on the North of the island.

I was in awe of this small fishing village, each building and house a different colour from the next. The backdrop of the mountains, made it seem as if it was the only place in the world that mattered; which to me, at the time, it was. I was alone with my family, swimming in the warmest sea I had ever experienced. It glittered in a way that can only be described as magical, every moment I experienced there felt like a dream.

Assos, Kefalonia

Every place I visited in Kefalonia made me feel as if I was being let in on a secret. Everywhere seemed so secluded and was nothing like I had ever seen before.

Melissani Cave was something of a fantasy; that I still cannot believe exists in the real world. No words or pictures could do it justice, being there is a experience on another level. I could almost feel the history and magic flow through the water beneath the boat I sat in. One of the strangest parts about the cave was that it was around a mile from any open water, meaning the water in the cave was part salt water, part clear water.

Another surprise Kefalonia had waiting, were the Loggerhead turtles, commonly seen in the harbour of the capital Argostoli. Each about a metre in length, and beautifully majestic. I had never seen a turtle of this size, so close and out of captivity. It was lovely to see these beautiful animals free.

This is a short video of our time in Kefalonia
